Description:A Practical Approach to Corporate Networks Engineering is dedicated to corporate network design and engineering, covering the different levels of network design and deployment. The main theoretical concepts are explained and the different functioning mechanisms are illustrated with practical experiments. Using an open source network simulator that is able to emulate real network equipment and run concrete network scenarios (Graphical Network Simulator), the authors present several realistic network scenarios that illustrate the different network protocols and mechanisms and can be easily replicated by readers at home. Readers will be able to configure the different network equipments, run the scenarios and capture traffic at the different network links on their own, ordinary PC, acquiring a deep knowledge of the underlying network protocols and mechanisms. This interactive and practical teaching approach is very motivating and effective, since students can easily follow the explanations that are given throughout the book, making this work a valuable addition to the existing literature. Content:Architectures and basic operational protocols: This chapter provides a discussion of the most relevant network design issues and a brief description of some fundamental concepts and protocols used on corporate networks (IPv4 and IPv6 add ressing issues, the TCP and UDP transport protocols, the DHCP and DNS network services). Data link layer: In this chapter, the most important aspects of the layer 2 network design are covered, including redundancy issues, Virtual LANs (VLANs) deployment, the description and implementation of the Spanning Tree, Rapid Spanning Tree and Multiple Spanning Tree Protocols. The most relevant functioning details are demonstrated using real network scenarios. Network link layer: In this chapter, the most important routing protocols used in corporate networks (RIP and OSPF, for both IPv4 and IPv6) are explained and deployed, highlighting their main advantages and drawbacks. Multicast routing is also address in detail. Quality of service: The forth chapter presents and discusses the main issues associated to quality of service provisioning in corporate networks. Topics like queuing mechanisms, the Integrated Services and the Differentiated Services architectures are covered in detail using appropriate network scenarios. Access control and secure communications: Network access control mechanisms are covered in detail, together with tools used to deploy secure communications (namely, IPSec). Network services: This chapter explains the main upper-layer protocols in detail, illustrating the configuration of the most important application layer services that are used in typical corporate network scenarios.
