Rome has long since fallen; the legions have retreated. A Gothic overlord, Theoderic the Great, is master of Italy. He is an Arian, a heretic to most, but a tolerant monarch whose stature as a leader is unquestioned, yet in later years his anger savages those he honored most. A Roman Briton of ancient lineage is befriended buy the Gothic King and also by Boethius, the greatest Roman of his day and one much honored until the King destroys him.
