Om Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg

Wagner originally conceived Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg as a 'comic' opera. But it became more like a love story about a knight and an heiress. It was premiered in Munich in 1868 before Wagner's new patron, King Ludwig of Bavaria. Nuremberg's Mastersingers, are members of a guild of burghers. They are descendants of the troubadours of the Middle Ages, but pompous, pedantic and petty. Their art, regulated by its rules and structures, is exemplified by the character of the hilarious Town Clerk, Sixtus Beckmesser. The most distinguished Mastersinger is the cobbler-poet Hans Sachs, who realises, regretfully, that he is 'past it', and thus must that accept that the beautiful Eva is destined for Walther von Stolzing, the knight from Franconia. He frustrates their elopement, although in doing so he creates a riot. So that they can marry, Sachs instructs Walther how to compose a compliant Master-song, the Dream Song. This evolves into the Prize Song which enables Walther to be awarded Eva's hand.Sach's emotions are expressed in his Elder or Lilac monologue and Song'Wahn' (madness) monologue,Wagner had his personal love-story at the time. He had fallen for Cosima von Blow, the daughter of the composer Franz Liszt.
