It traces a “hidden lineage” of women in Kerala’s theatre: women who defied social norms when acting on stage was taboo, and often faced ostracism, abuse or social ostracism — especially during 18th & 19th centuries when women were barred from acting. Their struggle and perseverance, the book argues, paved the way for a new wave in Malayalam theatre — shaping its history, culture and social relevance.
