This volume describes how the Mainz archbishops lived and worked from 1396 to 1484, a period of reform in church and empire. As archbishops elected the king, they were members of the ruling elite and dealt with the major political issues of the day. In their rivalry with the Count Palatine of the Rhine and the Landgrave of Hesse, they were concerned with expanding the worldly power of the Electorate of Mainz and with its spiritual competences.
