In the Epistle to the Romans, Paul frequently speaks of “sin” in the singular, and sin is personified in many metaphorical statements. Research has not yet managed to identify a coherent source domain. Jonathan Reichel shows that a coherent metaphorical complex is established in Rom 6–8: Paul portrays sin as a tyrant that operates within human beings, preventing them from carrying out their will.
